Bill Lawrence, co-creator of Ted Lasso and Vince Vaughn’s Bad Monkey, is teaming up for a drama series titled Bad Monkey. Apple TV+ has given the project a 10-episode order based on Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel. Vaughn will executive produce as well as star in the film. Lawrence will write and executive produce the series.
Here’s the official description for Hiassen’s novel:
Andrew Yancy -late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office – has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig.
But, because this is Hiaasen country, Yancy must first navigate an obstacle course of wildly unpredictable events with a crew of even more wildly unpredictable characters, including his ex-lover, a hot-blooded fugitive from Kansas; the twitchy widow of the frozen arm; two avariciously optimistic real-estate speculators; and the Bahamian voodoo witch known as the Dragon Queen, whose suitors are blind
The project is being developed at Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence’s Doozer Productions has a presence. Doozer’s Matt Tarses and Jeff Ingold will also serve as executive producers. Meanwhile, Liza Katzer will co-executive produce.
Vaughn recently finished filming as Simon Kilmurry in the upcoming comedy Queenpins. Queenpins is directed by Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly and stars Kristen Bell, Stephen Root, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel McHale, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. The plot revolves around two housewives who devise a $40 million coupon scheme.
