If you were hoping to see Nicolas Cage in the part of the iconic Joe Exotic, you’ll have to settle with one of his other current or impending odd roles. Amazon Prime Video has chosen to cancel a scripted series in which Cage would have played the subject of the successful Netflix docuseries.
When Tiger King’s popularity was at an all-time high and we were all confined at home watching the docuseries, the project was put up at Amazon for development by CBS Studios and Imagine Television Studios around a year ago. The project’s popularity waned in the last year as the enthusiasm worn off, and it never progressed beyond the script stage. Following Amazon’s rejection, it appears unlikely that the concept will be shopped elsewhere. If you’re looking for a Tiger King project, Peacock’s Joe Exotic limited series, which just begun production, is still going strong. Carole Baskin is played by Kate Mckinnon, while Joe Exotic is played by John Cameron Mitchell.
Joe Shreibvogel (Cage), an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who struggles to retain his park, would have been the focus of the Amazon project, which was penned by American Vandal creator Dan Lagana. We’d have been in the lion’s den with Joe, learning how he became Joe Exotic and how he lost himself to the point of ending up in prison as a result of a botched murder-for-hire scheme. The project was based on the “Texas Monthly” article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into The World of a Man Gone Wild”, by Leif Reigstad.
Are you disappointed that you will not be able to see Nicolas Cage in the role of Joe Exotic?
