With the release of THE SUICIDE SQUAD in August and the start of work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn has two superhero films on the horizon, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t bored by the genre. The director claimed that today’s superhero movies are generally boring to him right now when describing why he tried to make The Suicide Squad distinct from every other superhero movie he’s seen.

During a conversation with “Gamesradar,” Gunn talked about how he wants to set The Suicide Squad apart from other films in the genre, and that’s when he admitted to being bored with parts of it, but he did agree that some are trying new methods to keep things from becoming old. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“They’re mostly boring to me right now. I loved them at the beginning and there are still people trying to do different things [with them], so it’s not a 100% rule, but a lot of them are boring. So I think it’s about bringing in other elements from different genres.”

When it came to incorporating other genres within the superhero universe, Gunn noted, “Making a supervillain war caper film appealed to me. Films like The Dirty Dozen and Where Eagles Dare combine several themes, such as the backdrop of war with the caper heist element, as well as the sneaking around, high stakes, and adventure. It provided me a fantastic excuse to make a picture in a genre I’ve adored since I was a child, and to do so in a large way without having to hold back.” From what we’ve seen so far of The Suicide Squad, it appears like Gunn has created a film that isn’t typical of the genre, thus his approach could help the premise feel new. Regardless of how much money items are worth,

The Suicide Squad follows Task Force X troops as they are dispatched to the South American island of Corto Maltese to demolish Jotunheim, a Nazi-era jail and laboratory that housed political prisoners and conducted experiments. Bloodsport is played by Idris Elba, Harley Quinn is played by Margot Robbie, Peacemaker is played by John Cena, Rick Flag is played by Joel Kinnaman, Polka-Dot Man is played by David Dastmalchian, and Ratcatcher 2 is played by Daniela Melchior. Captain Boomerang is played by Jai Courtney. Thinker is played by Peter Capaldi, Amanda Waller is played by Viola Davis, Sol Soria is played by Alice Braga, and Blackguard is played by Pete Davidson. Savant is played by Michael Rooker, T.D.K. is played by Nathan Fillion, and Weasel is played by Sean Gunn. Flula Borg as Javelin, Juan Diego

What do you think of James Gunn’s remarks? On August 6, 2021, The Suicide Squad will be released on theatres and HBO Max.
