If you thought Mark Millar was done with espionage after collaborating with Matthew Vaughn on multiple chapters of the Kingsman franchise, think again. Millar’s latest spy project, King of Spies, was unveiled today by Netflix and Millar.

According to the NetflixGeeked Twitter account, King of Spies will first be released as a graphic novel before being adapted for the streaming service. The plot follows Britain’s most powerful secret agent as he battles his most deadly foe: his own mortality. It’s time to hunt down the real monsters when the world’s most deadly guy goes loose.

Here is the longer, official logline:

In King of Spies, Britain’s finest spy faces his most dangerous foe yet: his own mortality. Sir Roland King, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and given only six months to live, looks out at the world he has saved so many times and believes he can’t leave us in such a mess. There’s greed and corruption on every level, untouchable despots he’s not allowed to approach, and a system he no longer believes in. He wants to use his remaining time to make a difference with his unique mix of skills while also repairing the damage he caused in his personal life. The world’s most lethal man has gone rogue, and he knows exactly where all of the bodies are buried. It’s time to leave now.

Millar hinted in May that he was working on a “high-concept espionage series” for Netflix that would be separate from his work on Kingsman. Millar told Netflix at the time, “We’re hard at work on a six-episode live-action espionage series right now, my first since Kingsman, but a very different kind of property.” “I approached the writer because he’s someone I’ve admired for two decades and he was the only person I could think of. This has the potential to be one of my most successful franchises.”

As of this writing, there are little details on King of Spies, but the above tweet does show us some really stunning artwork for the series. Mark Chiarello and Ozgur Yildirim are the artists behind the above-mentioned artwork. Neither is expected to contribute to the comic book series as an artist.

“With Kingsman, the spy world had been kind to us, and a return to the genre had to be something unique. This is the project in question. I’m a sucker for stories of elderly gunfighters returning for one last mission, and this is the Granddaddy of them all “Netflix was informed by Millar.

Even though King of Spies was just announced, Twitter users are already calling for Pierce Brosnan to be cast in the lead role. Can you see the resemblance in the artwork above? I certainly can. We’ll be sure to let you know more about King of Spies as the project develops.

Meanwhile, the third film in Millar’s Kingsman franchise, The King’s Man is scheduled to hit theaters on December 22, 2021.
