CAUTION: THIS STORY CONTAINS A SLIGHT SPOILER FOR THE LOKI FINALE ON DISNEY+.
WandaVision may have a short run, and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier may be a one-off (though that is subject to change), but Loki appears to be returning for a second season. The Disney+ Marvel series will return for a second season, as revealed during the mid-credits sequence of the conclusion.
Beyond the title card with the news, no other specifics were provided, but it was previously stated that, unlike WandaVision or The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Loki could be guaranteed to run for more than one season. Loki is the third Marvel scripted TV series to premiere on Disney+, and it has been well received. Samba TV stated that Loki’s debut episode was the most-watched of the Marvel Disney+ series to date after its premiere. I won’t go into detail about what happened in the conclusion to avoid spoilers, but it did set up a continuation that will most likely continue in another film and beyond, making a second season all the more exciting.
Loki is a film starring Tom Hiddleston as the titular God of Mischief, set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, in which an alternate version of Loki creates a new history. He’s taken to the Time Variance Authority, a mysterious bureaucracy that exists outside of time and space and keeps track of the timeline. They give Loki the option of being deleted from existence owing to his status as a “time-variant,” or helping to correct the timeline and avert a larger threat. Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, and Tara Strong also star in the series.
So far, the MCU series has continued to do well for Disney and Marvel. WandaVision was nominated for 23 Emmys Wednesday, including Best Limited Series and acting accolades for Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, and Kathryn Hahn. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier received six Emmy nominations, including a stunning mention for Don Cheadle’s 98-second reappearance as Colonel James Rupert “Rhodey” Rhodes in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama category. I think that’s just Marvel’s power. The animated What If…? will be Marvel’s next Disney+ series. Hawkeye is set to debut in late 2021, while numerous more Marvel scripted originals, including She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Iron Heart, Secret Invasion, and Wakanda, are also in the works.
