Netflix updated its curious audience on the platform’s top 10 most-watched movies of all time earlier this year. The down-and-dirty, Chris Hemsworth-led action thriller Extraction was an obvious contender at the top. The film, which was produced by the Russo brothers and directed by Avengers: Endgame stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, blended a political thriller from the 1990s with modern direct-to-video action. It was a colossal hit two months into a global pandemic. Obviously, Extraction 2 is on the way.
Hemsworth was on hand at Netflix’s Tudum fan event on Saturday to break the news.
“If you thought our first film pushed the limits, wait until you see what Sam and I have planned for this next installment.”
Tyler Rake, Hemsworth’s black-ops merc, was shot in the neck while protecting Ovi, the son of an Indian drug lord, at the end of Extraction. There aren’t many ways to recover from one of those! The Russos, on the other hand, know what they’re doing, and Extraction ends on a note in which a blurry figure who looks a lot like Rake appears in Ovi’s life. There’s enough room for a direct sequel… or perhaps a prequel about Rake’s early years in the Australian army? Extraction 3 can’t be far behind, either.
Netflix did not announce a date for Extraction 2. Hemsworth will next be seen in the upcoming Marvel Studios fourquel, Thor: Love and Thunder, due out on May 6, 2022.
