Bluepoint Studios, a standout developer who has worked closely with Sony for years, has finally been acquired by Sony. Sony Japan, which purchased Housemarque earlier this year, was the first to leak rumours of an acquisition. Bluepoint is already hard at work on a completely new game.

The acquisition of Bluepoint should come as no surprise. The PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and one of the PS5’s first hits, 2020’s remake of Demon’s Souls, are just a few of the developer’s successful PlayStation-exclusive titles.

Bluepoint’s purchase is the latest in a string of Sony acquisitions, which has included Firesprite and Nixxes Software this year. Nixxes specialises in porting console games to PC, a platform in which Sony has expressed interest in investing. Firesprite is the developer behind several PlayStation exclusive titles, and Nixxes specialises in porting console games to PC.

Bluepoint’s president, Marco Thrush, said in a blog post announcing the studio’s acquisition, “Becoming a part of PlayStation Studios empowers our team to raise the quality bar even further and create even more impactful experiences for the PlayStation community.”

The next “impactful experience” from Bluepoint, on the other hand, will not be a game that players have seen before. Speaking to IGN, Thrush confirmed that the studio’s next game won’t be another remake, but an original title. “Right now, we’re working on original content for our next project,” Thrush said. “We can’t say exactly what it is, but it’s the next step in our evolution.” While the studio has yet to make an official announcement about its next game, its previous titles have set a high bar.
